CREATE researcher Professor Adam Rose received the Distinguished Research Award from the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM) at its 6th Annual Conference in New Delhi, India, October 28 – 30. The IDRiM Society is in interdisciplinary organization committed to conceptual, empirical, and policy-related research and practice related to natural and man-made disasters. The organization was formed by groups at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) at Kyoto University, Japan, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) headquartered in Laxenburg, Austria.
“This award is important to me for several reasons,” Professor Rose explained. “It represents recognition for CREATE’s innovative and comprehensive research on economic consequence analysis. This has been a team effort, together with several post-docs and graduate students, which recently culminated in our transforming our conceptual and empirical research into a user-friendly software system for high-level public and private sector decision-makers. The recognition of research on resilience is also gratifying, in that I have endeavored to give this oft-misused term some specificity and developed an operational metric that we have applied to a range of disaster scenarios, including the 2001 World Trade Center attacks and to simulations of man-made and natural disasters, such as anthrax and dirty bomb attacks, earthquakes, floods, and human pandemics. The consequence analysis and resilience studies have ranged from impacts on individual targets such as ports, financial districts, and utility networks to counties, states, regions, the US economy, and the world economy. We have been proud to have our research inform the policy process as well. I believe this work reflects well on our Economics research team, CREATE, the Price School, USC, and DHS.”
Professor Rose was cited for his accomplishments relating to research leadership on economic consequence analysis of natural disasters and terrorism, pioneering research on resilience, prominent research on the economics of climate change policy, input to the policy-making process, and mentoring of post-docs and graduate students on disaster risk management.
The Distinguished Research Award this year also went to Professor Bijay Anand Misra, Professor and Dean Emeritus, School of Panning and Architecture, New Delhi. Previous awardees include Norio Okada, former Director of DPRI; David Alexander of University College London; and Kathleen Tierney, Director of the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder.
