Professional Development

CREATE offers a variety of special training programs. These include seminars available to the academic, government and business communities as well as professional training aimed at showcasing and sharing CREATE's expertise in risk and economic analysis. Professional education and training consists of short courses, tabletops, workshops and certificate programs.

 

Executive Program in Counter-Terrorism

The newly offered Executive Program in Counter-Terrorism is a unique week-long course that is designed to challenge international counter-terrorism leaders and enhance their analysis, coordination, and knowledge of the evolving terrorist threat. Instituting best practices and networking for homeland security success are the overarching themes of the program. Taught by academic, research and government experts from around the world, sessions are aligned with the divisions of the DHS S&T Directorate. Participants included professionals from government and industry.

Aviation Safety & Security Program

The Viterbi School's Aviation Safety and Security Program provide hands on education and will cover the use of models and tools for evaluation of security and anti-terrorism, within a modular format. The short courses will also provide training in the methods of analysis. By completing courses within a series of modules, students will earn a professional certificate. Short courses designed for police and fire departments aim to help personnel develop safety programs that can be used in the event of terrorism.

This is a first-rate aviation safety program that has operated for more than fifty years with more than 21,000 aviation professionals having completed coursework. Based at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the program's participating organizations include the FAA, NRSB, FBI, US Coast Guard, and all major airlines and manufacturers. The instructors are leading experts in the world and are active and current in their fields, including academic and practical leaders in Human Factors, acknowledged authorities in Risk Management & Risk Assessment, industry experts in security, former NTSB accident investigators, the president of Emergency & Disaster Management, and hazardous materials and legal instructors. The student profile is about 66 percent corporate and 34 percent government.

Risk Assessment Courses

CREATE also delivers an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Risk Analysis Course aimed at the investigator and inspector level (GS 13-14). This is a two-day training sessions in risk analysis and management conducted as part of the career development programs for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The purpose of this two-day course is to introduce ICE agents, officers and managers to the concepts, models and tools of risk analysis and risk management. The objective is to increase the course participants' awareness of risks, the need for balancing risk and reward in decision making, and tools for helping them to make decisions in their work. The course uses real life problems to demonstrate the value of risk analysis and management. In addition to teaching concepts and models, the instructors provide training in the use of several simple Excel-based computer tools for risk analysis and management.
