On January 14 & 15, CREATE held a research symposium entitled ‘Terrorism Risk’ Analysis at the University of Southern California. Over 15 risk analysis experts from industry, academia and the military made presentations about opportunities and challenges for the use of risk analysis in the terrorism area. Detlof von Winterfeldt, co-director of CREATE and Deputy Dean for USC’s School of Policy, Planning & Development, and Vicki Bier, Director of the Center for Human Performance and Risk Analysis and Professor at the University of Wisconsin’s College of Engineering, organized and hosted the event and led discussions with an audience of nearly 50 academic and government researchers. The presentations described risk assessment methodologies illustrated with terrorism examples as well as relevant discussions of past applications. Papers resulting from these presentations will be published in a special edition of the journal Risk Analysis.
