Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard of California’s 40th district (and member of the appropriations committee on Homeland Security) and her chief of staff and field director visited the CREATE center at USC and met with CREATE Director, Dr. Ali Abbas. The group discussed many of CREATE’s activities including the new web site; the professional education initiative at CREATE; various research activities with the coast guard and the TSA; economics of natural disasters and cyber security; and the upcoming TSA symposium.
The U.S. representative mentioned she would like to attend the symposium if she is not in session at the time. She also offered her willingness to offer office space in Washington D.C. and to help gather interested parties for presentations made by CREATE to showcase some of the research results.
Other members from CREATE also joined the meeting including Dr. Isaac Maya, Director of Research, and Dr. Adam Rose.
The congresswoman applauded the waiting time study for effects on GDP that was conducted by CREATE and also emphasized her desire to see more professional education courses offered to people at the ground in the TSA. She emphasized the importance of public perception and public understanding of the efforts DHS is doing to improve security and to preserve values.
The teams exchanged contact information and proposed plans for future collaborations.
