CREATE Announces New Leadership Positions

CREATE Director Detlof von Winterfeldt has announced two important changes in the leadership of CREATE.  Erroll Southers, formerly Director of Transition, has agreed to assume a new role at CREATE as Director of International Programs.  In that capacity, he will continue to manage the executive program on counterterrorism, lead the high-level speaker series, and expand CREATE’s international outreach.  At the same time, Isaac Maya, who has successfully led the research activities at CREATE for the past 10 years, will assume the additional responsibilities for transition as Director for Research and Transition.

About Dr. Erroll Southers

Dr. Erroll G. Southers is the Director of Homegrown Violent Extremism Studies at the University of Southern (USC) California Safe Communities Institute. He was President Barack Obama’s first nominee for Transportation Security Administration Assistant Secretary, and he was also California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Deputy Director for Critical Infrastructure of the California Office of Homeland Security.

Dr. Southers’ career has spanned all levels of law enforcement, formerly serving as Assistant Chief of Homeland Security and Intelligence at the Los Angeles World Airports Police Department. He also previously enjoyed the distinction of FBI Special Agent and SWAT team member, as well as Santa Monica Police Officer. About Dr. Isaac Maya

Dr. Isaac Maya, PhD, PE (Nuclear), has over 25 years experience in executive management, strategic planning, and high technology academic and industrial research and development.

This includes practical experience in program and project management, product development and commercialization and fiscal responsibility, in both industrial/commercial and academic environments.  Dr. Maya has specialized in interdisciplinary research for the government, military and commercial sectors, ranging in scope from information technologies and systems to nuclear power reactor systems to start-up business management and operations.  The breadth of his refereed journal publications and conference proceedings and other technical reports span a broad spectrum of disciplines, including risk and decision analysis, economics assessment, social science, and intellectual property protection, as well as the technical subjects of nuclear engineering science, chemical engineering, and program/project management. Read more
